What does FS mean?
FS or Fundamentals of Surveying exam is your first step in becoming a licensed surveyor. Sometimes referred to as Land Surveyor in Training or LSIT exam, this is administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The exam consists of roughly 110 multiple choice questions which takes about 6 hours to complete.

Geodesy is one of the most difficult subjects in the LSIT because many students are not familiar with key terminology and basic geodetic calculations. This course cover Intro to Geodesy, Datums, Gravity, and Satellite Positioning. The Geodesy portion of the SIT covers basic geodetic theories, datums, and satellite positioning.
Fundamentals of Surveying (FS): Survey Computations
COGO, Curves, Areas, and Volumes
Survey Computations can be difficult and confusing. To succeed on the LSIT, you need to be able to quickly understand what land surveying formulas to use and how to apply them. This review course focuses on horizontal curves, vertical curves, COGO, and areas/volumes. This seminar walks the student through survey computations including horizontal curves, vertical curves, COGO, and areas/volumes.

Take a Simulated FS Exam with 110 Questions
Ready for the NCEES FS exam? Don’t take it without preparing using a simulated 110 question Fundamentals of Surveying practice exam. Both the morning and afternoon exam sessions include the correct proportion of exam questions from each FS category, are written using similar language and question calls as the FS, and have been created to test your preparedness for the real exam. Please expect to spend three hours for the morning session, enjoy a one hour break, and then finish the afternoon session in another three hours.

Tony Nettleman is a Professional Surveyor & Mapper (PSM), Attorney and Geospatial Sciences professor at Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
