What does FS mean?

FS or Fundamentals of Surveying exam is your first step in becoming a licensed surveyor. Sometimes referred to as Land Surveyor in Training or LSIT exam, this is administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The exam consists of roughly 110 multiple choice questions which takes about 6 hours to complete.

With such an investment of time and effort it is important you give your best effort to succeed so you don’t have to retake the test.  NLC’s. Fundamentals of Surveying exam prep training will fully prepare you for the test.  It covers, in-depth, all aspects of the test with a flexible online process that allows you to study for the test at your own pace and even redo modules that you need extra work in.

The NLC Inc. Fundamentals of Surveying Exam Prep program includes 12 complete modules which you can buy individually or save and buy the complete bundle and get a BONUS FS Practice Exam. See the various modules below or click the button below to get the complete bundle.

Fundamentals of Surveying (FS): Basic Sciences

Geology, Dendrology, and Cartography

The Basic Sciences section of the LSIT review course covers everything you need to know about land surveying basics including dendrology (plants), geology (types or rocks and formation of the earth), and cartography (building maps and using coordinate systems). This seminar discusses the basic sciences required to pass the LSIT exam including dendrology, geology, and more.

boundary law nettleman

Fundamentals of Surveying (FS): Boundary Law and the Legal Aspects of Surveying (v2)

Deeds, Conveyances, Priority of Calls, and Adverse Possession

Legal Principles of Land Surveying is one of the most heavily tested components of the FS. In this seminar, we will cover topics such as creating boundaries, deeds & descriptions, water boundaries, easements, and more! This seminar highlights fundamental concepts in the legal aspects of surveying and includes deeds and descriptions, easements, adverse possession, water boundaries, and more.

Fundamentals of Surveying (FS): Geodesy (v2)

Geodesy, Ellipsoids, CRD Systems, Datums, & Projections

Geodesy is one of the most difficult subjects in the FS because many students are not familiar with key terminology and basic geodetic calculations. This course covers several important subject-areas including Intro to Geodesy, Ellipsoids, CRD systems, Datums and Projections

survey computations

Fundamentals of Surveying (FS): Survey Computations (v2)

COGO, Curves, Areas, and Volumes

Survey Computations can be difficult and confusing. To succeed on the FS, you need to be able to quickly understand what formulas to use and how to apply them. This review course focuses on horizontal curves, vertical curves, COGO, and areas/volumes.

geographic information systems

Fundamentals of Surveying (FS): Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Acquiring, Manipulating, and Analyzing GIS Data

Learn the fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Land Information Systems (LIS) including history of GIS, GIS building blocks, types of GIS/LIS systems, and more.

surveyor math techniques

Fundamentals of Surveying (FS): Basic Math Techniques (v2)

Decimals, Significant Figures, Order of Operations, Percentages, Absolute Value, and Angles.

Many students have taken several math courses during college but few remember some of the basic calculations and formulas required to pass the FS. This series of lectures covers all the basics.

Fundamentals of Surveying (FS): Advanced Math Techniques (v2)

Trig, Matrix Algebra, and Geometry.

Many students have taken several math courses during college but few remember some of the more advanced calculations and formulas required to pass the FS. This series of lectures covers advanced math concepts needed to succeed in the surveying field.

Fundamentals of Surveying (FS): Spatial Data

Acquiring, Analyzing, and Manipulating Data Collected from Levels, Total Stations, and Other Land Surveying Instruments
